This is just a quick post about AI.
It seems like two things are happening at once—endless hype about how superintelligent AI will be, and also lots of examples of how it absolutely sucks. This contradiction doesn’t seem to have any effect on the STEM idiots who pimp this stuff.
It seems like infinite money will be pumped into AI, with hype about how it will revolutionize everything, along with examples of how AI actually does not do anything it is supposed to do. If the STEM assholes pimping AI had any basic thinking skills—which they do not!—this contradiction might jump out at them. But all they know how to do is just keep making AI and saying how great it is, even though it doesn’t do anything it’s supposed to do.
Okay, so why does AI suck? Very basic stuff—it will use the available pool of data to create its knowledge. And what is the biggest pool of data that exists? The Internet. And what is the Internet made up of? The worst bullshit that could ever possibly exist. Idiots posting lies and nonsense all day, every day, by the millions, for decades now. That is where AI is going to get the data that it bases its decisions, its creations, off of. This isn’t complicated—AI is not something from outer space or an alternate dimension that is coming into our reality with special knowledge that is untouched by human error.
It is working with data from the fucking Internet—the biggest cesspool of lies and nonsense ever conceived—and basing its “intelligence” and “creativity” off of that. It is not bringing anything new to the table—it is just combing through the lies and bullshit in digital space and putting them together efficiently.
That’s all that AI is—a more efficient way of spreading bullshit. It has nothing to do with truth, knowledge, creativity, imagination, or anything else that might have value. All it will do is accelerate the worst parts of the Internet. And we’ve already seen that this is the case—but still, STEM morons will keep hyping it as the savior of society, and venture capitalist firms will keep pumping millions of dollars into it.
Have a nice day and thanks for reading.
Ok, Chomsky, general AI and the singularity are semi-religious mythologies and the idea that computers are speaking to us from some metaphysical dimension is just Nick Land pothead bologna. I agree with that. However, the people pushing the message that self-driving cars will replace trucking and nanobots will replace blood cells and death will be overcome by cryogenic preservation, yatta yatta yatta… that’s coming from boomer tech executives and pump-and-dump hucksters who want to fleece naive retail investors. The people really working with the computers, playing around with the chatbots and image generators are just guys having fun online. They’re engaged in creative work, and this just comes off as pouting about people having fun without you. I don’t think “work” has to have this promise that it will put food on a table or a bridge across a river or turn the lights on. They’re just working on cool things and it gets a lot of attention cause it’s new and interesting and funny when uncensored. But if you’re falling for the boomer tech manager line about how this will move the economy forward then you’re getting the wool pulled over your eyes.
